Friday Recap for January 3, 2024

Friday Recap for January 3, 2024

I hope everyone had an enjoyable New Year's and is primed and ready to go for 2025. I have been working hard to get ready for the upcoming year as a new county commissioner. To say that I have a steep learning curve is a gross understatement, but I am really enjoying the adventure and look forward to a productive year for myself as well as the commission as a whole.

I have added a new resource that I recommend everyone to check out. It is called M4LU which stands for Mom's for Liberty U. It is primarily educational with the end goal of equipping parents. Each month there will be a new subject with in-depth presentations, readings and videos. January starts with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL); February is Critical Race theory (CRT). You can go to M4LU to see everything they have to offer.

As a special bonus for us living in Williamson County, the inaugural presentation is right here in Williamson County on Wednesday the 8th. Click on the M4LU site above for all the information.

Williamson County School District

There were no meetings this week and none are scheduled for the next week.

For the rest of the month, there are two meetings listed below. I will publish the agenda for the work session next Friday.

  • Work Session January 16th
  • Full Board Meeting January 21st

Williamson County Commission

The Public Health committee met on Thursday. The committee consists of: chairman Jeff Graves, Gregg Lawrence, Drew Torres, Steve Smith and Ricky Jones. They discussed three resolutions.

The first one was an additional grant for the health department from the state for $67,300 and it passed 5-0. The second was a group of donations totaling $9,625.77 to be used by the Animal Center and it passed 5-0. The third was a resolution in opposition to fluoridating public water in Williamson County and was withdrawn.

To be clear, the resolution opposing fluoridation was in no way binding. During the discussion, a representative from the health department made several statements in support of fluoridating our water and I am sharing two that I think capture their position. One was that fluoridating water has been declared one of the greatest health achievements of the 20th century and the other was that the evidence is clear that fluoridation is both safe and effective. It was pointed out by Gregg Lawrence that Spring Hill is no longer fluoridating their water.

In response, I pointed out that the NIH published a paper in 2014, that included 92 references, stating that the small benefit of fluoridation isn't worth the risk. You can see that study by copying and pasting "Water Fluoridation: A Critical Review of the Physiological Effects of Ingested Fluoride as a Public Health Intervention" into your browser. I tried to link it, but I kept getting an error message. I also mentioned that the EPA has recently (October 2024) lost a suit over fluoridation. If you want to read the 80-page decision of the court, go here. Additionally, I brought up the problem of dosing the public with a toxic material without informed consent. No discussion on the topic ensued. Drew Torres suggested that Gregg Lawrence, who proposed the resolution, change the wording of the resolution to direct it towards the state as opposed to the county. The resolution was subsequently withdrawn to be re-written and proposed at a later date.

The joint Budget and HR Committees meet next Monday at 4:30 pm in the large conference room in the county building at 1320 W. Main. Due to the length of the packet of materials for the meeting (80 pages), I can't attach the file. Everything they discuss will be on the agenda for the full commission meeting on the 13th and I will have that available as a link next Friday. In addition, the meeting will be recorded and you can watch it by entering Williamson County Budget Committee in your browser at 4:30 pm on Monday or anytime thereafter.

The Parks and Recreation Committee meets on Tuesday at 5:30 pm in the large conference room in the county building at 1320 W. Main.

The Highway Commission meets on Wednesday at 8:30 am agenda. The meeting will be held at 302 Beasley Dr.

The Planning commission will meet on Thursday at 5:30 pm in the main auditorium of the county building at 1320 W. Main St. agenda/ minutes. Packets

The board of zoning appeals met on Thursday agenda. There was no video so I don't know how the vote went on the agenda items. Next week there are several meetings and you can see all of them here
