What an historic week this has been. Radical change doesn't even begin to describe what is unfolding before our eyes. I hope you all are enjoying the show as much as I am.

What do county commissioners do?

I am continuing my series on our county commission, how it is organized and what it does.

Every commissioner is assigned to at least three committees. There are 14 committees and each committee has five to seven members except Audit which has three. Here is the list of committees, when they meet and what they discuss:

Statutory Committees: Budget, five members, meets every 1st Monday. Any resolution that involves revenue or expense has to go through the Budget Committee. Purchasing and Insurance , five members, meets every 4th Tuesday. Deals with all purchasing and insurance for the county. Investment, five members, meets as needed proposes and reviews investments by the county Audit, three members, meets as needed Ethics, five members, meets as needed when there is an ethic compliant against a commissioner.

Standing Committees: Law Enforcement and Public Safety, seven members, meets 3rd Wednesday and hears from the Sheriff's Department and Public Safety Department Property, seven members, meets 4th Wednesday and hears from Property Education, seven members, meets 4th Monday and hears from Williamson County Schools Tax Study, five members, meets 3rd Tuesday. Reviews all existing sources of revenue and develops new sources. Public Health, seven members, meets 1st Tuesday hears from the Health Dept.

2024-25 Rotating Committees: Steering, six members, meets as needed and establishes or discontinue all standing committees and appoints members of committees with approval of the commission. Rules, six members, meets as needed creates and amends rules for how commission meetings and committee meetings are run as well rules for filing resolutions. Human Resources, six members, meets 3rd Monday hears from HR Dept. Parks and Recreation, six members, meets 1st Tuesday hears from Parks&Rec

From time to time throughout the year, some committees do not meet because there are no pending resolutions to discuss for that month.

As you can see, there are a lot of meetings scheduled for each month besides our monthly board meeting which is the 2nd Monday of each month. I know this is a broad swath if information, but there is a lot going on in our county. I highly recommend that you go to our monthly calendar for February and pick a committee meeting to attend and see for yourself how we make decisions for you.

Next week, I will take you through the life of a resolution which, I am certain, you will find infinitely fascinating.

Williamson County School District

The full board met on Tuesday Agenda Video. There was only one item to vote on and that was open zoned schools (item 6.a. on the agenda) discussion starts at 1:01:20. There was an interesting DECA presentation by students starts at 32:50. Carole Birdsong, director of communications reported on student and staff awards that starts at 56:10.

The AI generated summary is below. For some reason, it left out some of the student awards, but you can watch the Carole Birdsong segment to hear it all. Also, since I am now a commissioner, I get reports from the school district which I am sharing below.

On Friday, there was a meeting of the School Board and our legislative representatives and I will have more information about that next week. This a yearly meeting where school board members are able to ask our legislatures about pending bills that impact education and make requests about bills they would like to see.

Williamson County Commission

The Sheriff's Department report

The Sheriff's Department publishes a report every month that includes things like number and types of arrests, number an types of 911 calls as well as new hires etc. You will see the letters CAD at the head of several columns and which stands for Computer Aided Dispatch.

In addition to the monthly report, the Sheriff's office has published bios and pictures of the new Command Staff as well as an organizational chart with pictures.

The HR Committee met on Tuesday. They had one resolution to discuss and it passed unanimously. It is a good thing as the liaison person the grant funds is a advocate for veterans. If the grant stops, the position is terminated. The county has no costs for this service. Members of HR are: Betsy Hester, Gregg Lawrence, Paul Webb, Drew Torres, Meghan Guffee, Brian Clifford.

The Rules Committee met on Wednesday to discuss three resolutions. The first one resolution 2-25-1 regarding censure and censor of commissioners during commission meetings was withdrawn. The other two resolutions were simple house keeping rules that you can read below. Both passed unanimously. Members of Rules are: Judy Herbert, Pete Stresser, Greg Sanford, Tom Tunnicliffe, Matt Williams (vice chair) and Sean Aiello (chair)

The Property Committee met on Wednesday to discuss four resolutions. They all passed unanimously. I have an AI summary below as well as the resolutions. Members of Property are: Lisa Hayes (Chair), Paul Webb, Greg Sanford, Bill Petty, Betsy Hester (Vice Chair), Sean Aiello, and Gregg Lawrence.
