Friday Recap for December 20, 2024
Photo by Brandon Jean / Unsplash

Since this is the last Friday Recap before Christmas, I thought I would share a short paper I wrote about Jesus as the only-begotten son of God. After all, Christmas is our celebration of that miraculous singularity that happened 2,000 years ago when eternity entered into our time and space. I hope you enjoy it. I wish you all the most wonderful Christmas.

Williamson County Commission

On Monday, the joint Budget and HR committees met. video. There wasn't a hand out, but I have a screen shot of the numbers presented. Budget members present, Rogers Anderson, Judy Herbert(chair) Meghan Guffee David O'Neil, Mary Smith. HR members present, Betsy Hester, Paul Webb, Drew Torres, Meghan Guffee Brian Clifford.

Of the 1,200 county employees, there are 432 who are below the minimum of market when compared to 18 comparable counties and municipalities. We are, according to Mayor Anderson, in a competitive market, and we need to keep up in order to acquire and retain high quality employees. The explanation begins at 4:16 on the video.

On Tuesday, the Tax Study committee met to discuss the resolution I have provided below. I am also including a presentation from public comment that explains the situation in more detail. Members present, Lisa Hayes (chair), Barb Sturgeon, Greg Sanford, Chris Richards. Chas Morton.

There is a one-time Adequate Facilities Tax (AFT) of $1 per square foot for new residential construction, which is the maximum allowed by the state. There is also a tax for non-residential construction, and the fee is only $.34 per sf. even though the maximum allowed is $2 per sf. In addition, the non-residential can only be charged in unincorporated areas of the county which aren't experiencing non-residential development. In other words, Williamson County is not getting any AFT from non-residential construction.

There is also an Education Impact Fee that Williamson County charges for new residential construction which could be impacted by a change in the non-residential AFT. The resolution seeks to pay for a study to determine if changing the AFT will affect the Education Impact Fee.

On Wednesday, the Law Enforcement/Public Safety committee met. They discussed and voted on 10 resolutions and approved the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) for Public Safety. Members present Jennifer Mason (chair) Ricky Jones, Chas Morton, Bill Petty.

  • Donation for $4,103 for Veterans Treatment Court
  • Approve new Peer Support Specialist for Veterans Treatment Court funded for three years by a grant
  • Trade of two-way radios for a double wide trailer
  • Purchase land in Fernvale for a new fire station
  • Drug sniffing dog donation
  • $4,500 grant for opioid abatement
  • Addition of nine new hires for the Sheriff's Office. This is for six months. The ongoing costs to the county will be somewhere around $1.2 m for this positions.
  • Agreement with Maury County to transfer 911 calls in an emergency
  • Agreement with Maury County and Williamson County to enter into an inter local agreement between the two emergency districts
  • Approval of Williamson County Public Safety Capital Improvement Projects (CIP)

If not me, who?

If not now, when?

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1)

“We work hard with our own hands. When we are vilified, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer gently.” (1st Corinthians 4:12-13)
